The Wait Loop

Like almost any game of this type, Magnar has a delaying loop that will slow down the frame rate to 20Hz if neccesary. This is used to get a constant frame rate, and less slowdown in other places.

During the game you can press [ins]+[W] to toggle between "wait state on" and "wait state off". This isn't particulary useful, but it causes the game to speed up to quite some extent in certain areas.

Passwords

Start playing the game in any level. Press '7' on your keyboard. A black line will appear at the top of the screen. Then type any of the following passwords. If typed correctly, the effect of your password will be displayed in the top line, then press return to activate it:

The banana that never was

At the time we were busy on Magnar, ANMA (Andre Ligthart & Co.) had published (erm... not Squeek, not Frantic, but..) oh yes, NOSH! Obviously, we checked it out, as ANMA were at that moment the only other Dutch team that could produce games of some quality. What struck us most was the boomerang weapon.

We considered putting a little NOSH character in some level of Magnar, or maybe in Black Cyclon. When you would come close, Nosh would fire his boomerang weapon, and Earl would comment: "Hey! Why is he throwing a rotten banana at us?"

I need not explain where that leaves the boomerang weapon.

Jingle bells, jingle bells, ...

One original version saw the player collecting bonus letters, a bit like the hearts in Konami's Penguin adventure. You could collect "LIFE", which would, guess what, grant you an extra life.

On the other hand you could collect "SNOW", but this was much more difficult. Strangely enough, the landscape would turn to a chilly blue and snow would start falling, freezing all enemies, and allowing you to complete the level without a problem. Strange bonusses indeed.
